A Quiet Vista- oil on canvas 41x30cm
Despite the intense heat, visitors thronged the Jardin Majorelle. This small passageway, between the bookshop and giftshop, was momentarily empty providing an interesting composition of colour as well as a juxtaposition of architectural lines against Nature’s soft foliage. The vista was reminiscent of Matisse’s ‘Open Window, Collioure’ which is an icon of early modernism and an important early painting of the Fauve School which emerged in 1904. Juliet extended this connection by using broader brushstrokes and bright colours, techniques from postimpressionism and neo-impressionism, to emulate Matisse’s effect of spontaneity.
