Reflections in a Pool- oil on canvas 61x61cm
Bougainvillea blossoms float on a pool on which broken reflections of a cheese plant (monstera deliciosa) are visible as a goldfish glides through the shadows. This small, square painting is one which the artist refers to as a ‘patchwork of the world’ and is a favoured shape and size for numerous paintings of varied glimpses of the world around her. Inspiration for this painting was drawn from Matisse who, from around 1912, used the recurring subject of goldfish in his work. Once, on a trip to Morocco, Matisse commented that the locals spent much time contemplating goldfish in pools. He suggested observing goldfish brought ‘tranquillity, stillness and pause’. It is this atmosphere which Juliet aimed to create within this painting.
