Reflections in Jardin Majorelle- oil on canvas 120x60cm

£280.00

The motif of the lily pad has been repeated in paintings across the years, not least by Claude Monet. Water lilies are symbolic in many cultures; for ancient Egyptians the flowers were seen as a symbol of unity; for Hindus and Buddhists water lilies symbolise the potential to ‘rise above’ and attain enlightenment; and in Christianity, the flower is mentioned in the Old Testament and linked to innocence, purity and love. The pond in this garden was built by the artist when she was in her teens and the lilies on it have bloomed since. This painting reflects the palms in the Jardin Majorelle, almost turning the world upside down but providing a moment of cool reflection in 41° heat.
